Porsche Taycan vs Audi E-tron GT: Which electric car is best?

Porsche Taycan vs Audi E-tron GT: Which electric car is best?

The Porsche Taycan and Audi E-tron GT are two of the best electric cars on sale today.

Both are desirable, great to look at and insanely fast, and they even cost similar amounts.

But that’s hardly a surprise as they are basically the same underneath.

But which is the smarter choice?

Looks

There’s lots to like about both but to our eyes, the Porsche looks better from the front. Its bonnet is lower and sleeker, its headlights more interesting, and its lower bumper less fussy. It rides lower to the ground too, which gives it a stealthy look.

But the Audi steals the show from the back thanks to a muscular, aggressive rear.

Performance

There are two versions of the Audi: the E-tron GT and the faster RS E-tron GT. The latter, with its 637hp twin motors and 3.2-second 0-62mph time, is the one to get if you’re most keen on performance.

There are various versions of the Taycan too, including the top-of-the-range Taycan Turbo S, which is even faster than the top-dog RS E-tron GT.

Expect a frankly painful 0-62mph time of 2.9 seconds from its 761hp twin motors.

Looking for more options? Try the Mercedes-Benz EQS

This one’s not a direct competitor to the E-tron GT or Taycan but if you want a high-end electric car with a lot more luxury, then you’ll want to check out the EQS.

It’s the electric alternative to the S-Class, and it’s probably the most refined car on the market today – impossibly quiet, comfortable and full of outrageous tech.

Want a 141cm screen across the dashboard? No problem. Want doors that open when you walk up to them and close when you sit down? They’ve got you.

It’s not as quick as the Porsche or Audi, nor as flashy, but it’s lovely to drive and be driven in.

Practicality

If we compare the similarly priced Taycan Turbo and RS E-tron GT, it’s the RS E-tron GT that delivers more range – 283 miles versus the Porsche Taycan Turbo’s 220. But the Taycan gets revenge with 84 litres more space for luggage, thanks to slightly more underfloor storage.

Both have 800 volts, 270kW rapid charging that can take you from about 5% battery capacity to 80% in 22 minutes.

Drive

Despite the E-tron GT having taller suspension (perhaps in a bid to make it softer over rough roads), it’s the Taycan that’s more comfortable.

Audi doesn’t deal with potholes as well, and its body rocks around on uneven surfaces. The Taycan also has steering that is more precise and responsive, and is more fun to thread through bends. It is a Porsche, after all.

Price

Taking like for like, they’re similarly priced. The Taycan Turbo costs £116,000, while the Audi RS E-Tron GT retails for £113,000.

Despite that £,3000 price difference, the Porsche may end up being better value as it has more standard paint colours and wheel options to choose from.

Customising the Audi just how you want it will mean spending cash you might not have to with the Porsche.

What is a crossover?

‘Crossover’ is a word that’s applied to all kinds of things (think music, movies and literature) but what do people mean when they talk about crossover cars?

A wide variety of cars get labelled as crossovers, from compact ones such as the Audi Q2 and the Nissan Juke to larger ones such as the Nissan Qashqai or the Jaguar I-Pace.

And although some crossovers have four-wheel drive, many only have two-wheel drive and no more off-road ability than your average family car. The truth is, there’s no hard and fast definition.

That being said, crossover is generally used to describe a car that rides higher off the ground and looks more rugged than a conventional hatchback.

Increasingly, though, many people use the terms SUV and crossover to mean the same thing.
