Podcasts are the next thing Facebook is going to ruin, starting next week
What you need to know
- Facebook is getting ready to enter the world of podcasts starting next week.
- New podcast clips are also part of the equation.
You'll eventually be able to clip parts of podcasts as well.
Facebook is set to enter the world of podcasts with June 22 being the big day. Facebook really does have to ruin everything, doesn't it?
According to a new report by The Verge that builds on the June 22 date shared by Podnews, a new "podcasts" tab will appear on Facebook pages. Facebook is in the process of emailing owners of podcast pages to get them on board.
Starting June 22, 2021, Facebook will be the place where people can enjoy, discuss and share the podcasts they love with each other. To help them find your work, we can add a new tab to your Page that will feature your podcasts.
The Verge also received one of those emails including the news that a future podcast clips feature will allow listeners to create and share snippets of podcast episodes.
Along with the option to distribute their show through Facebook, podcasters can decide whether to enable clips, which the company says will be created by listeners and last up to one minute in length. These "may help increase visibility and engagement." Presumably, these will be easily shareable outside of the podcaster's page. Short-form clips have been a key way for Twitch streamers to share moments from their lengthy streams, and Facebook seems to hope the same idea can apply to podcasts.
Facebook seems to be hoping that podcasters are already using its platform and that they'll allow their feeds to be published via their pages, too. Whether there's a future ad component to this play remains to be seen, but it's difficult to imagine that isn't at least somewhere on Facebook's podcast roadmap.
