Film studio A24 reportedly explored a $3 billion sale to Apple TV+
What you need to know
- A24 explored a sale of its studio for upwards of $3 billion.
- One of the companies that potentially talked to the studio about a purchase was Apple.
Imagine Apple owning the company behind Midsommar?
A24 reportedly almost considered selling itself to none other than Apple TV+.
As reported by Variety, the film studio apparently spent some time exploring a sale. One of the potential buyers was none other than Apple, who currently has a multi-year agreement with the company that has already resulted in titles like Sophia Coppola's On the Rocks and Boys State.
Possible scenarios for a deal have included merging with standalone players or an outright absorption by a tech giant. A24's tires were kicked by Apple, with whom it signed a multi-year film slate deal in 2018 that has yielded titles like Sofia Coppola's "On the Rocks." Though some sources said the Apple acquisition talks happened closer to the slate announcement, two other insiders said talks were much more recent.
Variety reached out to both Apple and A24 for comment but did not get a response from either.
A24, if nothing else, has built a solid brand for itself over the years. If a trailer comes on and their logo pops up on the screen, my interest is immediately peaked. Some of their better-known titles are Uncut Gems, Midsommar, and The Lighthouse. One competitor of the studio pointed this out, saying that everyone is always interested in what's next for them.
"You never hear a word about their flops, and they definitely have them," noted one competitor. "All anyone cares about is what they're doing next."
Apple and A24 are currently working on future projects like Sharper, The Sky is Everywhere, and The Tragedy of Macbeth. If you want to enjoy all of A24's productions in the best quality possible, check out our list of the Best TVs for Apple TV 2021.
