Apple updates its insanely popular AirPods wireless headphones
Apple’s ridiculously popular AirPod headphones are a common sight almost anywhere you look.
Today, the Silicon Valley tech giant announced its third generation of the wireless earbuds, which will go on sale for £169.
They feature a new design that’s halfway between the standard AirPods and the premium AirPods Pro. Like the Pro set, they also feature Apple’s spatial audio tech which moves the sound around depending on where your head is positioned.
The new AirPods are resistant to sweat and water, and feature a ‘force sensor’ for controlling music and phone calls.
Apple has paid particular attention to the battery life and says these headphones will manage up to six hours of listening time (five with spatial audio enabled) and up to 30 hours of total listening time when you factor in the charging case.
‘AirPods forever changed wireless headphones with their groundbreaking design, incredible sound, and magical experience,’ said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing.
‘We are excited to introduce the next generation of AirPods, featuring unrivaled sound through Adaptive EQ and spatial audio with dynamic head tracking, along with seamless interaction between Apple devices — making the world’s best-selling headphones even better.’
Adaptive EQ is the nifty trick that tunes sound in real time based on how AirPods fit in the user’s ear.
An inward-facing microphone monitors for sound, and then Adaptive EQ, powered by computational audio, tunes the low and mid frequencies to account for what may be lost due to variances in fit.
The new AirPods are available to order from the Apple Store today and Apple says they’ll arrive on shelves (or through your front door) from Tuesday, October 26.
